After extracting the solid uranium oxide concentrate (yellowcake) from the ore, the uranium (U308) actually needs to be in the form of a gas before it undergoes the next process - enrichment. It is converted into uranium hexafluoride (UF6) which is a gas at relatively low temperatures.
